Description
Art by Duy Truong.
"I'll be right with you, Sheriff Wurtherington." She towel dried the girl's hair as best she could with an old rag.
I said, "We need someone to help us out with the law business and wondered if you might recommend someone."
"What would the job be?"
I said, "We need someone who can be at the jail all the time. My deputies and I are running all over town all day and we need someone to run the jail. We need a person we can rely on to keep the prisoners in line, feed them, and take messages. This person would need to sleep there. We could use several people. One will not do. It's an important job. It would pay very little."
She smiled. "Could you use children as a part of this?"
Zeke said, "Children would a great help."
I said, "Two boys and girl would be perfect."
She said," You aren't very subtle are you? I don't take charity, Sheriff."
"No charity. You would earn every penny," I said. "We really need you."
She gave me an embrace. "You are a blessing, child. Sometimes I wonder where you come from."
