Description
Wurtherington, Diary, art by Duy Truong. This is our second bedtime scene and Duy Truong has created another marvelous piece of art that is simply stunning. In this scene, the reader can see that Polly, the loveable vulture, has joined the group. Duy has gone all out with this drawing (as she always does) and has all the little touches that make this painting magical.
It is bedtime now. I have Zeke and Cedric tucked in doll-size beds in opposite corners of the room. I discovered that they tend to keep each other awake when they are too close together. Polly stood outside the window looking so forlorn all by herself; it was clear to me she wanted a sleeping place with us. I told her she could sleep at the foot of my bed and I would make a special place for her in my room as soon as I could. She was happy and quickly settled in.
I placed a goblet filled with golden coins given to us by Mansa Musa on the mantle. It sat alongside Thomas Paine's note that he had given to me when he began writing Common Sense.
We sang that tune Ali Baba had sung for us when his thieves popped out of the urns.
"Ali Baba, Ali Baba!
We are forty thieves who will never run.
We fight for freedom, under the desert Sun.
Ali Baba, Ali Baba!"

Reynold, this outstandingly beautiful illustration combined with your description about Polly suddenly reminded me of something from my childhood. When I was very little I truly believed that my dolls could "feel". They were alive to me in my imagination, just like real life people. When I knew my parents were asleep and would not know, I used to put all my dolls in my bed to keep "warm" and I would curl up on the floor ! There is more to this that I can't write here, but just wanted you to know how these beautiful pictures stir up long forgotten memories of magic and other-worldly delights! L/F

Hi Lee, We finish each book with a bedroom scene. We use it to reflect upon the adventure now over and the warm feeling of simply being safe at home.
