I decided to remain silent while the magnitude of an Indian princess appearing from the sky on a giant bird sunk in. "Psst," I whispered to Zeke and Cedric. "Be ready to lift me into the air on my signal. We are going to do some illusions now."
Zeke wondered, "Are you going to do any card tricks?"
"Silly, Zeke—we will let them think I am an angel that flew in bearing a message of great importance."
I let a full five minutes go by while I listened to their chatter. That was enough for me to understand their language and my accounting here for my diary is translated.
I raised my hands to the sky.
Stillness filled the air—
A gentle breeze caressed the parched yellow grasses....
"I come to you bearing a message of great importance for the Apache nation. You must listen to my words and carry all that I say to your lodges."
I signaled Zeke and Cedric to lift...
